Lucas, for all his faults, jealously guarded the sacred canonical timeline, not allowing any comics, novels, games or other emphemeral apocrypha to touch on the prequel era until he tackled it himself. The Thrawn trilogy existed because his plan was to never make episodes 7, 8 and 9.
