The reason Paramount let Roddenberry produce the first Star Trek movie was to keep him happy, thus keep the fans happy. They knew he had a cult following and could trigger a boycott via the fan network with a word. He had a way to bypass the newspapers and magazines entirely. So they gave him considerable control over the original feature, which had evolved out of the Phase II television pilot. When it went way over budget and had disappointing boxoffice (when compared to Star Wars) they took the feature films out of his hands. But they were willing to play ball for a new television series, something he had proven capable of producing at least once. Unfortunately he was so drug and liquor addled by 1987 that the show was very weak, only improving when his bad habits drove him to an early grave.
