Sometimes, with the flat-earthers, I have wondered if they are deliberately planted to create an association to discredit far more supportable positions, eg race is real. People like the Catholic monk who invented modern genetics (ie Mendel) understood that accepting the reality of what God created is part of understanding God himself. So rather than deny reality, you try to understand it.

The "tension" between science and religion was an artificial thing. Many great scientists were also theologians - Bacon, Copernicus. Many others like Ampere, Pasteur etc were deeply religious.

If, as the Bible says, God is truth, then faith has nothing to fear from truth. I think religious people do far more damage to faith by turning themselves inside-out to deny obvious truth than they would do by accepting it.

On the political side, we have to understand reality and that we do not have the capacity to deliver (fill in blank with ideal candidate). Instead, we have to make choices between what is at least possible.

Trump has worked out pretty well in his second term. Very solid on the 2A, has made a good start on immigration issues, the tariff stuff to try to incentivize domestic production and so forth. Granted, this comes with some downsides. But I'll accept those downsides to see Somalians stripped of their untouchable status and drug boats blown to smithereens. It's a huge leap better than the alternatives.

In our purity spiraling we run the risk of being like the 30 year old girl on a dating app who only wants guys who are over 6'2" tall, earn over six figures, etc. Somehow, being unfamiliar with the statistics involved, she is bewildered that she can't find men.

Attitudes haven't changed. The reality of the cost/benefit ratio has changed. Between college costs that have dramatically outstripped inflation for over 50 years and wages that have failed to remotely keep pace with inflation over that same time, a college degree will no longer even pay for itself.

And that doesn't even consider that the degree requiring job field is effectively closed to White men and advancement is now relatively limited for White women.

@judgedread Robert Anton Wilson said work to increase intelligence is work to solve all our other problems. That by itself makes ai completely worthwhile imho. The fact that it upsets stupid people is just icing on the cake.

Keep in mind the same general philosophical arguments against AI were being used to claim it could never do character or facial recognition or win a game of Chess against a serious opponent... right up to the day it did.

There are people who are absolutely certain AI will amount to nothing.

I am not absolutely certain AI can become more powerful to the point of being indistinguishable from demigodhood, but I can't see any proven barrier that would prevent it.

If the human brain's processes can be emulated they can be sped up. IQ research shows that a great deal of the difference in quality of thought between the dumb and the smart is due to speed.

If that research is correct and AI programmers manage to create a human-like mind it will soon be a superhuman mind as more compute is thrown at the problem.

I was wondering if jewtube had misunderstood Elon's statement about requiring hundreds of billions of AI chips.
