This is my novelty take, which is mine.
As theological chaos escalated in the wake of the Reformation it dawned on the hair splitters that if these disagreements mattered to God then most nominal Christians were now burning in Hell.
Rather than back off on their pilpul they did one of two things, boldly proclaimed, 'Yes, most burn in Hell and they got what they fucking deserved!' or... stopped believing in Hell.
This is the risk of going hardcore. People can snap entirely.
