There were 3 public drinking establishments in early medieval Europe.
The Tavern (Wine House going back to Roman times)
The Inn (usually attached to church properties especially monastaries)
The Alehouse (private homes that produced the best quality ale in the neighborhood, put out a sign when the next batch was done, it was really just for pick up, but people got to talking and drinking)
The Ale House sold ale, not beer. Beer is ale with the additon of hops, which wasnt a thing in the UK until the 17th century or so. Hops became popular addition because it has anti-bacterial properties which aided in shelf life longevity.
