I believe this. In fact it's probably even bigger in terms of quality of life because some new technologies - the automobile in particular - amount to a generally available superpower. After watching my grandfathers brother fire up his new tractor to pull the same implement he without saying anything took the horses to the barn and removed their harnesses.

@bloggerski Millions of horses were destroyed in the early 20th century, especially in the 1920s as the automobile swept through the culture at speed. That's the reason 'the glue factory' was a midcentury literary trope (appearing in Animal Farm).

@tiddlywinkler I grew up reading science fiction and guys like Heinlein and Asimov who glimpsed that world in their youth provided an education on the subject.

Asimov in particular liked to point out that for most of human history technology was no different the day you died than it had been the day you were born. Asimov witnessed the dawn of the jet, electronics, space, nuclear and information ages in his lifetime. I can't recall if he grew up in a peasant hut in Russia, but some of his close relatives from the old country no doubt did.

I was just talking about this the other day. My grandmother went from growing up in rural Alabama where they cooked on a wood stove, drank water drawn from a hand-dug well, and used outhouses, to being one of the first school children to ride a bus to school, to building bombers during World War II, watching the moon landing, and even the dawning of the Internet. She saw telephones go from something that you might be able to use if you walked to town to having one in the house, to having touch tone dialing, to having a cordless phone, and although she never had one, she at least got to see widespread use of cell phones. Radios existed when she was a girl but they went from being rarities to being in every home to being replaced by the TV. She had a black and white TV with rabbit ears when I was a kid and she eventually got a color TV with cable. She went from sleeping on the porch during summer to having fans in the windows to having AC and never opening the windows.

She died in 2000 and if she suddenly reappeared today, I don't think she would even be able to understand where technology has gotten in the last 26 years.
