“becoming a general-purpose journeyman mechanic” takes five years, but “performing useful tasks on the road to that goal” does not take anywhere near that long (and in most cases, can be accomplished by “some bright kid” with reasonable handholding) and you can pay those people while they are doing those tasks for you
