Because most of Africa was conquered by the British Empire, they rejected capitalism for the most part and embraced Marxism after independence, simply out of spite for the British, which made Africa's poverty all the more tragic and avoidable.

It was Singapore's example of a non-colonial capitalist success that dispelled the myth that capitalism was "evil" and allowed countries like Botswana and Rwanda to rise out of pitiful squalor.
