@DW2 It's because net worth is assets minus liabilities (i.e. debt).

The average person living a comfortable middle class lifestyle has no net worth because they have nothing, have a mortgage, car payment, etc. However, they're not homeless or anything.

Nothing is stopping people from spending less than they make and saving their money, but most choose no to do so. Capitalism didn't fail, self control did.
