@mangeurdenuage @Terry It's related to nitrogen fertilizer use and methane gas from livestock.
It's all in the name of Climate Change.
BTW, natural gas IS methane, and nitrogen is the primary ingredient of air (78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen) so it's all total bullshit.
>It's related to nitrogen fertilizer use and methane gas from livestock.
Yes, it doesn't give me the source of these decisions.
>natural gas IS methane
It is slightly different but yes it is mainly composed of methane.
>and nitrogen is the primary ingredient of air (78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen) so it's all total bullshit.
I happen to be "an expert" (slightly knowledgeable) on that subject.
I'm going to stay simple because it's complex micro biology and chemistry.
Synthetic fertilizers have long term negative effects on the micro organism of the soil, which feed the plants.
Plants and micro organisms, bacteria/fungi etc.. are the ones who are converting, making minerals available for plants. If you put synthetic salts, because yes these petrol based fertilizers are salts, not only do these synthetic salts weakens ion exchange, which stops from fungi from being able to grow, but also breaks the symbiotic links between plants and the soil, because micro organism don't feed the plant in exchange of nothing, the plant actually give something to these soil organisms.
If the plant doesn't have to do that, that it is fed by humans then like electricity it will take the shorter path and not feed the micro life it's supposed to feed on.
Further more, the resulting soil is weakened since fungi/microbes can't develop properly, they don't create their "webs" for a lack of better term, which cause water to not be absorbed by the soil.
Even worse, if the soil is tilled, then the remaining micro organisms will be destroyed by the sun. Links that allowed the soil to be attached together is no more.
Which leads to erosion. Thus desertification
But wait there's more, this erosion not only leads to landslides the synthetic salts that were spread on the soil and not absorbed by plants starts to run when it rains, which in turns destroys not only the micro life of rivers, but actually also plankton in the ocean.
So you see this isn't bullshit.
To support my post I'll point you out to Justus von Liebig one of the pioneers of synthetic fertilizers and the man responsible for the no completely inaccurate NPK scale.
Who a year after publishing his work stated that he noticed that it had adverse effect on his own garden and that it would be preferable to stick with organic fertilizers.
Pdf related.
If you didn't get my nerd speak I recommended to see the Edden gardening project, which I started from, they do the same without the scientific technicality.
