@nugger The phrase in the declaration of independence that states that all men are created equal is in relation of the "divine right of kings". Jefferson was saying that nobody is born to be a king over other men.

Jefferson owned slaves. Clearly he didn't believe in equality or that all men everywhere were equal. He was writing a letter to King George of England.
