They've been laughing at us for years with the "Intel Inside" joke and having the Intel chip factory in Israel.
That said, Thinkpads are awesome for tinkerers. Get some chip clips, nuke the Intel ME and you're good to go.
Check out the coreboot, seabios, heads, & skulls repos on github and you'll find plenty of assembly to keep you occupied.

Not entirely. On the older Thinkpads (x230, t440, etc.) you can overwrite most of what's in the 2 onboard roms and then lock them.
Neutering is a better description. Only the very old ThinkPads can be completely libre-booted but it won't be a productive user experience unless you're Richard Stallman and live inside emacs.
