In practice yes, not in name. They paid tribute to the crown so that other feudal lords/royal army would come to his aid if his territory was attacked by a force bigger than he could handle (piracy or war).

There will always be a property tax no matter what and when.
You don't pay for the land itself but you have to pay for the protection of that land, be it to the central government, the feudal lord or the community for the shared police.

The only other option is to defend it yourself, paying the police/military privately (like the cartels do).

India does have serious advantages for bases on the moon: no toilet, sewer, water or trash system required.
They can even survive on their own poop.

It's not only in the US.
Even in South Africa during Apartheid, it was so different that it was considered two different countries, depending on which neighborhood you lived.
Whites in south africa, in Orania, STILL trust each other intrinsically to this day.
