@sun @amerika @RedTechEngineer @kura @lain @freepatriot @cell I'm not a huge star wars fan in general, but I think the action scenes and a good amount of the music in the prequels actually mops the floor with the originals. The CGI is super dated though and some of the dialogue can be pretty cringe. I think it has higher highs and lower lows.

We can at least all agree that they are better than the sequels. Maybe some people will agree with me that the 2d clone wars was the coolest shit ever.

@sun @amerika @RedTechEngineer @kura @lain @freepatriot @cell I would rather watch "Ice Pirates",then "Phantom menace",if given the choice of space operas

The first movie was coherent: make a fun space epic.

After that, decay set in... people drifted farther away from anything like a goal.

It felt like an episode of Stargate by the time they hit the Phantom Menace.

But it's true that some quality filmmaking went into the 1970s-1980s movies.

I cannot forgive an Ewok however...
@amerika @RedTechEngineer @kura @lain @freepatriot @cell there are a lot of directors that do great work when constrained creatively by a studio to make something that's not a plodding mess, but when they are free to do what they want they make a plodding mess.

Sort of like the role of editors generally...

Stephen King comes to mind. He did better when his editors clipped out the sprawl and fifth-grader sex scenes.
@amerika @RedTechEngineer @kura @lain @freepatriot @cell the old movies are not smart they are just well made and fun, phantom menace is plodding and stupid and the dialog is shit, the CGI looks worse than jurassic park six years earlier. jarjar binks sucks as bad as everyone says, the movie has fart and stepping in poop jokes.
@sun @lain @RedTechEngineer @freepatriot @cell @kura

I went back and rewatched the original trilogy sometime in the 1990s, realized I thought they were all cheesy but the 1976 movie got a pass for being fun, while everything afterwards was comical.

The 2000s movies, first one I saw at the end of it the audience was stunned into silence by how bad it was, then some dude stood up and said "THAT MOVIE SUCKED!" and everyone clapped.

They're just more postmodern recombinant bloat now, but let's face it... this series should have been one movie and quit.
