@internetfreak What came first, the barriers that separated the customers from the workers or the frequent robberies and assaults on those businesses?

Putting up those barriers comes at a cost, and it would not be done if there was not a need seen for it. The alternative is that the business no longer stays open, which would then result in complaints of "no businesses are willing to serve us in our neighborhood."
