Here is what you should do when someone presents you a scientific journal article to back up a claim

If the article has a mean or standard deviation request the raw data that was used to calculate the mean or standard deviation

If they fail to present the raw data then tell them since the raw data from which the mean or standard deviation was calculated was not presented, I choose to ignore that article

You should do this for any articles that mention statistical significance but no raw data
