Its a political puzzle that while recorded crime (in general) has been falling (in a range of surveys), people's perception of the danger of crime has not.

John Burn-Murdoch (FT) suggest the explanation lies in distinguishing major crimes from criminal disorder (the latter includes shop lifting, anti-social behaviour etc., which are on the rise).

People's lives are more exposed to such disorder (including lack of police responses to it) than to major crime, hence their worries...

Or there is a large surge in crime in the European Union and United Kingdom

Some immigrants choose to commit crime because the police are soft on immigrant crime

Immigrants found out the police will let them get away with things they would not get away with in their home land because the police do not want to be called racist

Instead they prosecute the people who report crimes for hate speech

The violent crime of these immigrants does not show up on records
