They've been doing that since the 90s. Some guy made a fortunate out of it. Most of them used the motors subtly on the downhill, but it caused a scandal when one guy effortlessly cruised up a steep mountain path without really trying.

Eventually they started using IR cameras to spot the heat leaking from the motors.
