That's why I like home assistant with Zigbee & Z-Wave. They can't talk to the internet unless you let them, and they make thermostats that you can control with smart automations and not have to worry about the government saying when things turn on or off.
If it ever came to it, I'll keep a smart thermostat plugged into a blank panel with phantom voltage to it. Let them turn it on and off all they want, meanwhile it's in a little box that thinks everything's great.
They could have created products that use less energy per cycle without connecting it to the internet
