Many years ago I heard that men perform better than women at all distances marathon level or shorter but that women perform better than men at distances greater than a marathon and that it is thought that this might be because women utilize fat better

However I have an alternative theory that women have more free time to practice for ultra marathons because of the way society is structured

Also are there more men beating women's times nowadays

The top 2 winners were a housewife & a man

Are there professional ultra runners? They should settle it.

@Eiregoat

In the documentary I watched years ago

The top two winners were usually a housewife who jogged five times a day and a man who owned a nutrition company but would go out jogging while ordering pizza to pick up on his jogging route or who would alternatively eat cheese cake while jogging

I am guessing the man had time because he conducted business over the phone while running

More than half the competetors were women

I am wondering if men can not afford to run it without being paid

@Eiregoat

I am wondering if men are now beating women in more recent runs at greater distances than marathons

Military competitions might be another way to get a balanced look at it.

@Eiregoat

What is the longest running distance in military competetions?

Do they have competetions with a distance longer than a marathon?

@shortstories >women utilise fat better

A: I can knit a sweater
B: I can fill it better

@shortstories I was curious. The most popular Ultramarathon is the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, with more than 10,000 runners per year. In both versions of the race, uphill vs downhill, the male runners beat the females by 25-30 minutes (~9% faster). The next most common, the Spartathlon, has the male record beat female by 2.5 hours (~12% faster).

Ultramarathons are something of a niche sport, so you're most likely just seeing some events that are numerically dominated by women, so there's not a lot of top tier male competitors to beat them.
