We already have free energy it is called photosynthesis
Can't use it directly to power anything. though.

We can eat plants and then move things around using our bodies with less pollution than using cars as transportation but when humans eat plants as a form of energy to perform tasks in the least pollutive form of power it emits a carbon dioxide foot print which the powers that be want to tax
