Does anyone get the feeling that if our overlords decreed that everyone must have their thumbs amputated, Americans would agree that the law makes sense and must be obeyed?

Not everyone would comply of course and it would take some time, but if they inconvenienced people's lives enough, offered some mechanical replacement for the finger, promoted the procedure through celebrities and rewarded the amputees, most would submit and many would even see it as a symbol of status for a time.
There's very little collectivists won't do for money, safety and status.
