Most historical ale and beer was significantly less strong than ours is today, but still, it was fairly common. laborers used to drink all the time in the 1700's because they believed it increased their strength.
@BiggusDiccus @BasedLunatic @Appelmoesje @Escoffier We don't know for sure, but likely between 4-10 ABV from the research I've seen.
That's comparable to today. Even Utah beer is 4%. You'll find some pricy things at about 9-10%, and then stupid expensive one offs will go higher like Sam Adam's utopias I think was about 20%.
