@dander pay is great, the work is hard, you cant have a girl unless you are ok with her cheating when you are at sea, you need someone to look out for your home or pets while you are gone, they dont really like women in these jobs and women generally dont like these kind of jobs. Always long hours and in really ice cold weather, the sea is you new wife but you wont understand the meaning of that untill you actually become a seaman, they really do talk like sailors.
@dander I have a stupid feminist/communist sister who went in to one of these schools to become (I shit you not) a marine engine mechanic, the school is extremely hands on, dont think you are going to be spending time behind a desk with a book. not only could she not do the work but she was allowed to continue her studies despite her failures only given the opportunity because she was a woman, she did not graduate

on her first school/work trip at sea on a real commercial boat with real crew and real work they kicked her off the ship and left her stranded on some port. mom had to send her money to fly her back to the states. again the work is hard, borderline brutal in fucking cold weather, 12 hr shifts, and be ready to kiss ass to your superiors dont expect to move up just by working hard, make sure you get along with everyone, work hard and kiss ass. they will work you to the bone.

they have a unspoken team structure/hierarchy and in many cases they work like a broken family that just works together just enough to pull it off. there is a lot of internal politics going on when you are out at sea, there is no I quit half way though being literally mistreated by your superior but then again most of what I know is what I got from my sister who also told the story from the perspective of

@dander here in the sates, I am not sure but there are schools for this, you pay out the nose and they set you up with your first job and shit but I am sure there are other ways to do this, I just dont know.
