asian languages look like they'd take an eternity to write out on paper. latin languages have very simple nice letters that take no time at all
@Nudhul they have slanty eyes because they are so tired after writing out all those funny letters
@BigTony i forgot the name for it but each character is a syllable and thats what their written language is composed of. alphabets are broken down a step further with letters used to assemble syllables

Chinese uses radicals in a certain pattern to form certain characters so you look it up in a dictionary based on the order of the radicals from what people told me

They then remove certain pieces of characters but keep other pieces to combine characters to form other characters

At least that is what people have told me

If you are going to learn a south east Asian language then Korean or Indonesian are easier than Chinese and Japanese

@Nudhul @BigTony

Chinese has no phonetic alphabet only pictogram

Korean has one phonetic alphabet plus optional Chinese pictograms which are not always used

Japanese has multiple phonetic alphabets plus Chinese pictograms

@shortstories @BigTony chinese is also tonal. how you pronounce something affects its meaning.

makes singing a tad complicated

@Nudhul @BigTony

Korean is not tonal except maybe things like you change the tone because you are asking a question which we also do in English sometimes

The tone does not change one word to another word like in Chinese

Korean is very easy to learn

And you do not need to learn pictograms for every sentence like in Japanese

@Nudhul @BigTony

In Korean you could for example have an entire book written in the Korean language with no pictograms and only a phonetic alphabet

But sometimes they use pictograms

@shortstories @BigTony no reason to learn an asian language i just think linguistics is an interesting subject, especially when it ties into history.

did you curry is the old english word for cooking? its a verb that has become a noun.

@Nudhul @BigTony

I can not understand English before a certain time period or when people try to make it sound like from before a certain time period

For example Schaeffer wrote English translations of the "Church fathers" and made the English sound older and it is very difficult to understand compared with some other writings in English from the same time period where they were not trying to imitate King James English style or whatever he was doing

@shortstories @BigTony old english may as well be an entirely different language. its probably more similar to german than it is to modern english, specially after the normans poisoned it with their ugly frankophonic filth

@Nudhul @BigTony

I remember wrong it is Philip Schaff not Schaeffer

He was born in 1819 and died in 1893

His book seires or part of his series called Ante-Nicene Fathers was printed in 1885

It was printed less than 140 years ago and he must have started writing it less than 200 years ago if this information is to be believed

It is possible to mostly understand but the English is very different

It really makes me wonder when the sudden change happened

@Nudhul @BigTony

So I have trouble understanding middle English which is newer than old English and older than modern English

Middle English uses lots of English words but they seem to mean different things and the grammar is different but it seems closer to English than German to me

@shortstories @BigTony tbh i think american english is closer in spelling to true english than british english is
