Socialism means workers owning their own means of production
If you support a man owning his own tools and getting paid to do repair work with those tools then that is a type of socialism
The problem is not socialism or even communism which both pre-existed Marx but Marxism
Marxism taught that government officials not workers should own the means of production but he claimed the government was the workers which it was not
In recent times people called governments that give a high tax rate to pay for welfare socialist but that was not the one and only historic definition of socialism
Even a high tax rate to pay for welfare like Universal Basic Income for adults for example would not cause a problem compared to a lower non zero tax rate if the welfare was not given to single mothers with more welfare given the more children they have and the taxes were not spent in a variety of other ways to harm society
Universal Basic Income would not be as harmful because it would not reward divorce and having extra children as a single mother with more welfare because everyone would get welfare and no one would be rewarded with extra welfare for bad behavior
