For masturbation, modern Orthodoxy officially says it misses the mark since you're wasting what should be in your wife, but early church fathers (except one) didn't care.

Roman Catholics say it is a mortal sin. Period.

It is Protestants that have an ironic hate-boner for masturbation (starting with Calvin and Luther) and a love of circumcision.
