It's not easy to devise a science fiction series format that allows for a wide variety of self contained short stories. Science fiction stories often end with the world changed, or they depict a wildly divergent culture. Star Trek solves the problem of maintaining character and universe continuity by setting the stories on 'strange new worlds' where any radical implications can be left behind as the ship warps out of orbit and onto the next big thing.
That's why most scifi short story series are anthologies like Outer Limits or Black Mirror and the occasional Twilight Zone. You end with the big plot twist then it's an all new setting and characters next week.
