They could be lasers from a weather balloon, jet or airplane without a orbiting satellite

Also maybe painting your house blue will protect against one type of monochromatic space laser but not another type of monochromatic space laser or perhaps they might choose not to target certain color objects as part of the instructions

The color scheme required for protection might be different next time so you have to be in the club or social loop to know what color works next time
