@sardonicsmile I don't see how this needs to be a conflict. You can just buy both crunchy and smooth peanut butter, and each can have their own. It's not like peanut butter goes bad quickly or takes up that much space.

Though yes, the real problem is that he somehow does not have the stones to tell his wife that he is going to have crunchy peanut butter because he wants to have it. Or he is convincing himself out of it when she might not even care thar much.

@houseoftolstoy Agreed. Perhaps he is conceding to not eat his food of choice to show a sense of solidarity with his wife, perhaps a budget constraint, perhaps an overbearing wife.
The Real problem is just as the cartoon illustrates. You are overthinking.

Aside: the fact he preferred crunchy peanut butter over creamy peanut butter, like a proper Gentleman, you know, is another issue that needs to be addressed.
