The government insists that Meta has a monopoly. If anything, the social media market is fiercely competitive.

In a way, the bot's not wrong; I saw a post just recently saying something about "the one feature that people care about in an SNS is their friends using it", and it is correct. You can see that quite easily by just asking friends to join you on fedi, by trying to appeal on the technical merits of fedi; most people don't give a shit, they use Facebook because their friends are on it, not because they like it.
So, once you hit a tipping point, doesn't matter what features or inherent value your thing has, it's basically fucked: People start leaving and they won't come back because there was no particular compelling reason for them to be there in the first place. But, by the same token, that tipping point is very hard to hit in the first place.

Of course, I am now imagining someone who refuses to leave Facebook not because "it's what's familiar to me" but because they actually genuinely think it's a good SNS, better than twitter, fedi, whatever. I wonder if such a person exists. (Starting from the footnote that fedi didn't grow out of people who simply wanted to hang out with their friends, and indeed, still barely does; most fedi users are the aberrant who care about technical merits.)
People tend to do what they think everyone else is doing.

When I was a kid my mom would often say "but what will people think?" I would always tell her... that's not the question. The question is "what do you think?"

Of course, I'm on the fedi, so I'm probably built different.
You're literally an Indian stomping elephant 😒
