Texas A&M President to Step Down After Controversy Over ‘Gender Ideology’
https://archive.ph/9LAfv#selection-497.0-497.73

"The university had been roiled after a student filmed herself arguing with the instructor of a children’s literature course that recognized more than two genders."
Texas A&M University’s president will step down after facing criticism over his handling of turmoil over a children’s literature course that recognized more than two genders, the university’s Board of Regents announced on Thursday.
President Mark Welsh’s last day will be on Friday, the board said. The move comes after the university fired the lecturer of the course, Melissa McCoul, and removed two administrators over the controversy. The issue caught national attention after a student filmed herself arguing with Dr. McCoul, citing President Trump, who has said his administration would push for the recognition of only two genders.
“President Welsh is a man of honor who has led Texas A&M with selfless dedication,” the university system’s chancellor, Glenn Hegar, said in a statement. He added, “At the same time, we agree that now is the right moment to make a change and to position Texas A&M for continued excellence in the years ahead.”
The A&M Board of Regents said it would appoint an interim president “to ensure a seamless transition” and to initiate a national search for a permanent president.
The student’s video went viral on social media last week after it was posted by a state lawmaker. Republican politicians in Texas, including Gov. Greg Abbott, criticized the university and accused Dr. McCoul of “blatantly indoctrinating students in gender ideology.”
Mr. Welsh fired Dr. McCoul the next day and explained in a statement then that his decision was not “about academic freedom; it’s about academic responsibility.” He said that Dr. McCoul’s course had included “content that was inconsistent with the published course description,” adding, “If we allow different course content to be taught from what is advertised, we break trust with our students.”
His move was met with a barrage of criticism. Some students and faculty said her termination was indeed a threat to academic freedom.
“This is about trying to tell faculty members not to teach certain topics,” Leonard Bright, a professor of public service and administration at Texas A&M, said on Thursday. “The rules are clear — we are the experts in our classes, and we get to design our courses.”
After Dr. McCoul was terminated, her lawyer said that her constitutional rights had been violated and that she was appealing the decision.

Mr. Welsh was not immediately reachable for comment on his resignation on Thursday. A former Air Force officer, he became president of Texas A&M in 2023, after having served as interim president for five months. He served as chief of staff of the Air Force during the Obama administration and was later dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M.

The fallout at Texas A&M, one of the largest public universities in the country, is the latest clash in an ongoing battle over academic freedom, politics and diversity that has played out on campuses nationwide in recent months.
Mr. Trump has threatened to cut billions of dollars in federal funding at many elite universities if they do not acquiesce to a litany of demands designed to reshape the culture of college campuses. Some faculty, students and college leaders have argued that the administration’s asks would curtail academic freedom and violate the First Amendment.
In the Texas A&M student’s video, the student accuses Dr. McCoul of illegally teaching about “gender ideology.” The video shows Dr. McCoul talking about a “gender unicorn,” a tool used to explain the difference between gender identity and gender expression.
“This very much goes against not only myself, but other people’s religious beliefs,” the student, who has not been identified, said in the video. “I’m not going to participate in this because it’s not legal.” Dr. McCoul responded, “What we are doing is not illegal.”
Representative Brian Harrison, the Republican state lawmaker who posted the video, said he had been trying to get Mr. Welsh fired for months.
“We need a bold conservative who will take A&M, restore it to its pre-woke glory and focus on the fundamentals of education,” he said in an interview on Thursday.
Mr. Harrison, who graduated from Texas A&M, has been pushing the Texas Legislature to pass laws that would eliminate L.G.B.T.Q. programming and gender instruction at public universities. But none of those proposals have been successful."

FBI to Categorize Trans People As "Nihilistic Violent Extremist" Threat Group, Report Says

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation is reportedly preparing to categorize transgender people as “violent extremists,” a categorization supported by organizations affiliated with Project 2025.

According to a September 18 report by independent journalist Ken Klippenstein, two anonymous national security officials said that the Bureau is discussing treating trans subjects as a subset of its new threat category, “Nihilistic Violent Extremists” (NVEs), which was created earlier this year. The Bureau defines “Nihilistic Violent Extremism” as “criminal conduct… in furtherance of political, social, or religious goals that derive primarily from a hatred of society at large and a desire to bring about its collapse by sowing indiscriminate chaos.”

“They are cynically targeting trans people because the shooter’s lover was trans,” an unnamed senior intelligence official told Klippenstein. “The administration has convinced itself that the Charlie Kirk murder exposes some dark conspiracy.”

Last week, the false claim that there were “transgender” engravings on the bullets that suspect Tyler Robinson allegedly used to shoot Kirk began circulating widely, boosted by anti-LGBTQ+ conservatives like Rep. Nancy Mace and Steven Crowder. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox later confirmed that there was “no indication that the ammunition included transgender references.” On Sunday, Cox told Meet the Press that Robinson was allegedly in a romantic relationship with a roommate who is trans, providing no additional public corroborating data or information of the roommate's gender. The authorities have stipulated the roommate has been cooperating with the investigation and was not aware of the shooting prior to its occurrence.

Despite no evidence linking an alleged trans roommate to Robinson’s motivation for shooting Kirk, right-wingers are nevertheless attempting to use this detail to push an anti-trans agenda. In a petition launched on Thursday, the Heritage Foundation — the far-right think tank behind the derided and controversial Project 2025 — and its spin-off group, the Oversight Project, asked the FBI to designate “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism” (TIVE) as a domestic terrorism threat category.

The group defines “TIVE” as “the belief that violence is justified against people who oppose [the trans community],” as well as the belief that opposing trans rights “itself constitutes a form of violence towards people who identify as [trans or gender nonconforming]... or poses an imminent threat to such persons’ emotional, psychological, or physical safety, including through self-harm or suicide.”

As The Independent noted, if such a category is adopted by the FBI, it could be applied to rhetoric used by activists, writers, and allies speaking out against anti-trans policies and rhetoric.

At least a dozen hoaxes have claimed trans people were responsible for mass shootings and other incidents since 2012.In reality, there is no evidence suggesting significant patterns of violence committed by trans people. In 2024, The Gun Violence Archive’s Executive Director, Mark Bryant, said that out of 5,000 mass shootings tracked by the archive, the number of trans or LGBTQ+ suspects is in “the single digit numbers.”

I have now interviewed over a dozen people about shutting down research projects and software projects. All but two have been deliberate closures (long enough timescale to reflect and correct course while winding down). I would be grateful if people who have been through abrupt closure (little or no warning, very short timescale) would share their experiences. I'm [email protected] and all interviews will be confidential. Thanks in advance - Greg

I don't know enough to write a paper called "Ten Bad Ideas in Online Safety" that explains (briefly, in terms that the general reader will understand) what's wrong with age verification, crypto back doors, and other plausible-but-awful proposals, but I would read it gratefully and share the hell out of it if it existed. (This toot prompted by reading some of PLOS's "quick tips" papers and thinking about the value of anti-tips, i.e., "here are landmines you don't need to step on".)
