This was spoken by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a leading figure in the early women’s rights movement in the United States. While traditional theology blamed Eve for humanity’s fall, Stanton viewed her act of eating the forbidden fruit as a courageous pursuit of knowledge and autonomy. She also challenged the interpretation of woman being created from Adam’s rib, arguing it signified equality rather than inferiority.
Stanton’s views were controversial even within the suffrage movement. Many of her contemporaries, including some fellow suffragists, feared that openly criticizing religion would alienate supporters and damage the cause of women’s rights. As a result, she was marginalized by more mainstream factions of the movement.
