Ads steal our attention from what we wanted to read, watch or listen to. We accept that to the degree we won't/can't pay for the content. But they paid to reach us and so compared to another business without marketing, they are skimping on quality or charging more.

Algos are similar. They play upon data they mined from us to push content we should like but also which they want us to see. More emotional than intellectual. We consume it instead of what we subscribed to or queued up.
