Ignaz Semmelweis was a young physician in the 19th century who discovered that there was a link between (basic hand washing) and maternal mortality rates in hospitals. He demonstrated the link and practically eliminated maternal mortality in by implementing strict hand-washing procedures among medical staff.
Yet, his discovery was ignored. He was mocked by fellow physicians and eventually kicked out of the medical practice.

Ads steal our attention from what we wanted to read, watch or listen to. We accept that to the degree we won't/can't pay for the content. But they paid to reach us and so compared to another business without marketing, they are skimping on quality or charging more.

Algos are similar. They play upon data they mined from us to push content we should like but also which they want us to see. More emotional than intellectual. We consume it instead of what we subscribed to or queued up.
