@FinalDresdonation Basement: It provides greater storage, work, and living space, plus you'll not need to get extra permits since you're building a house anyway. If you're anywhere that sees tornados as well, you'll need a basement. If you conditions permit, you might be able to use part of it for a root cellar, and save some need for refrigeration. Garages do allow for a separate workshop, but that is more situational and less convenient or flexible than a basement.
Agreed. I know someone who uses basement refrigeration, perfect for storage of salted meats & fish.
When you get around to planning outbuildings then you can consider garages, smoke houses, workshops, etc..
@DoubleD I have been more partial to a basement for storage reasons. If I lived more 'urban' I'd go garage, but being more rural defeats the direct security need in a small town for one I feel. You can always add a garage later, but not a basement.
