@Tfmonkey few months ago the american army started joint patrols with the iraqi forces and some suuni arab clans in the border area in northern syria, the stated goal was to stop ISIS from smuggling weapons, but the rumours are that iran is up to something, so you are probably right
@Tfmonkey the green area is occupied by us army, they started making alliances with arab tribes along the border up to the kurdish region (yellow)
Iran is supporting the syrians, and also some of the kurds, us position is pretty bad
