@UncleIroh Wonder how it compares to Sauerkraut my parents have almost every year home made Sauerkraut in barrel and the stench is horrible too.
Probably all fermented food smell bad
Trust me, sauerkraut tastes like creamy mash potato compared to natto.

I tried natto once. Holy shit, this is the perfect food if you enjoy eating cold smelly vomit.
