The "Cern" thing was particularly ridiculous, those people are clearly trolling the Religious Right. First they shot a video of the staff performing an occult ritual, now someone claimed they're going to use the solar eclipse to open a portal or something. Ridiculous

Those Cern dudes were probably trolling the hell out of everyone.
On the other hand, there are also people, including elites, who are legit into this. And they take it very very seriously.
There's a funny consequence to this - since atheists are mostly incapable of understanding how people can take any of this stuff seriously, it becomes a blind spot that is easily exploited.
The eclipse hype was still dumb though.
