I don't really care about the catholic church or any of the other cristian denominations.

Throughout history, europe society was based off families, communities and social connections, which is why it developed into a high-trust society. In the many smal villages and cities in europe, during the harsh winters and constant logistics problems caused by war, trust has been essential for survival and development.
The reason romans wanted hermits to be part of mass was to maintain that connection with your local people.
