In the old testament idolatry was forbidden but the death penalty for idolatry was eventually somewhat negated when God told the descendants of Israel to let the foreign countries invade & obey them as punishment for their wickedness & things would go will for them instead of telling them to execute the foreign rulers & invaders for worshipping other gods
Later in the new testament idolatry was forbidden but it was not said to go about executing idol worshipers
