Flying monkeys are the people narcissists use against their victim similar to the flying monkeys the witch in the wizard of oz sends out as best as I understand and this is a old figure of speech
there is also an expression about getting a monkey off your back that I think is common for drug addicts trying to rehabilitate or pretending to do so to use

The erroneous term flying monkey has been used in psychology to refer to enablers of an abusive person, such as a narcissist or a sociopath. It particularly indicates someone who does work on the behalf of the abuser, as the Winged monkeys do for the witch in the original book.[4]
