Let's say I want to use Linux and I already have a chromebook

Under no circumstances am I going to buy a computer with microsoft or apple software

Should I get a new Linux only computer to use Linux or should I use a chromebook?

The Chromebook keyboard is not as good but the Chromebook operating system is better than windows as far as I am concerned

It has a built in app that says something like "Linux terminal"

Are there any beginner guides for linux on chromebook?

I would just buy a $35 Raspberry Pi 3 and dick around with that. Chromebooks are garbage. I think the internet has successfully put Linux on one, but not sure it was a plug n play process. I use VMWare Player 17 and run Linux that way. All free to run on the desktop. Also, a good option.

Does the rasberry pi come with a monitor? Looked it up on wikipedia and the picture is a chip and a keyboard but no monitor

@DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

After I add everything it will probably cost as much as a chromebook

DEN WE WUSS LIVIN THERE N SHEEIT AND LEMME TELL YAW DAT SHEEIT WAS STRAIGHT BUSSIN NIGGIES I AIN'T EVEN CAPPIN DAWG :senko_think:
@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man There is the pi 400, which is built into a keyboard.
But also these computers are about the only ones you can find in use that are even less powerful than low tier laptops and Chromebooks
Shit, if he was nearby, I’d give him all my extra shit. I have extra laptops and TVs out the ass. I don’t even use em.
Same.
Dude, I’d just post something on Craigslist asking for old hardware people want to donate to recycling. You’ll have 20 computers in a week free of charge.
I have a built gaming rig with Win 11 on it.
Then VMWare on that. Plenty of horsepower to run anything.

@DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

If I set up the rasberry pi how do I instal! a operating system if it does not start with an operating system?

You load the Linux OS (or any OS) on a micro-SD card.

Yea I knew I read the Linux OS replacement on Chromebooks and understood it could be a process. Not impossible, but probably better off buying a cheap laptop Craigslist or something.
Yea it’s almost 3am, and I’m being lazy right now to look up a proper installation video. Easy to google, though…
Sudo dd if=<os image> of=/dev/sd(device letter)

Simple as.

@DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

So would the rasberry pi pretty much have to stay in one place on a table after the monitor is installed or could it be a portable computer that I would not accidentally break moving it with the monitor? Something I could use on a bed and then put back in a computer carrying case when I am done for example?

Raspberry Pi is small. Like the size of a cellphone but a little thicker. Easily portable, just connect a monitor.

Why not just not buy anything and use the chromebook I already have for Linux? Would it run into problems becausr chromebooks have weird keyboards or for other reasons?

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man Driver issues maybe.
If its unusual hardware you might have to fiddle around more than you want to or can easily learn how to do. Also im unsure of how locked down Chromebooks are these days.

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

So it sounds to me like you are saying I should find out what type of linux chromebook uses.

Does Linux use function keys a lot. Chromebook does not have function keys on the keyboard but you have to access them in abnormal ways unique to chromebook.

My biggest concern is I would not be able to access function keys on chromebook linux, because the chromebook operating system converts these other keys to function keys

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

Microsoft Windows was such a waste of memory that even with less processing power my chromebook feels faster to me because it does not have so many things running in the background to waste memory.

I am not looking for a computer stuck on a table nor a smart phone sized computer. I want a laptop sized computer with a laptop sized monitor and keyboard that I can move around, and I do not need much processing power. Does pi have laptops?

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man
no, but there is some laptops running linux with manufacturer support, how much money would you be willing to spend if you cant install a new os on your chromebook?
i think framework is about to release a pretty neat little laptop with a touchscreen in a few months, but that could be a bit expensive if you just want the bare basics

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

Chromebook worked great for me other than the keyboard but they told me I am at the last automatic update and from now on I will only get manual updates. When I get a manual update they warned they would uninstall all my apps. They uninstalled all my apps except certain ones that I believe are default to chromebook. They then would not let me install new apps such as the ones I had installed before. They left a linux terminal app available.

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man Depending on how complete that one is you might be able to install packages, including graphical ones through that
@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man Also if you tell us the model you are using it someone here is probably curious enough to figure out if you can just unlock the bootloader and install a normal Linux distro

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

I am not sure if Chromebook has a special type of linux to deal with it's unusual keyboard. Maybe it is better to use whatever type of linux it already has built in. I can try to look up the type of linux it has later I am using another device right now.

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man
linux is generally extremely adaptable and has many, many keyboard presets to select from, perhaps even that one and if it doesnt you could always figure out how to add a new one.

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man
Basically I have never used linux before and I want to figure out how to start using it with the type I already have on my chromebook and maybe see if I can install daggerfall. And see if I can get some ms dos games or other programs running on it that use the function keys just to see if I can get the function keys working. And see if I can run hyper rogue which chromebook uninstalled and which was removed from the google play store

tutorial?

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man
oh, a limited, terminal only version if that is what that is might give you the wrong impression.
many distros come with very solid desktop enviroments by now that require little if any terminal use if you dont want to use it.
using it is however very powerful

@special-boy @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man

But I kind of want to buy a new computer soon because I am concerned the computer prices will hike with the tarriffs. My options I want to choose between are a new chromebook with linux as an adfitional opetating system or a new computer with linux as the only operating system or I can get both. I kind of want to get a new chromebook with diagnol arrow keys on the keyboard if I continue to use chromebooks. I only want a laptop.

@Zergling_man @DeezMistaReez @special-boy

Mcrosoft Windows was worse it would not let me use word and or excel less than one year and in fact most likely less than six months after getting a new computer

I found a receipt of purchase for mcrosoft office products from years ago

And then I remembered the incident

Chromebook has treated me better than windows even after uninstalling all my free google apps that I did not pay for

@shortstories @DeezMistaReez @Zergling_man
if you search for the model you have + linux youll probably find someone who has tried it and either tells everyone that its a terrible experience or that it just works
I found an Xbox one X for $100 on Craigslist.
Might pick it up tomorrow.
Been downloading x360 roms all night. 8gb each. So, I’m ordering a 2TB 2.5” SSD to toss in it and emulate all the retro games up to 360. SHIT TONS of roms back to Atari I’ve already downloaded.
@shortstories Don't chromebooks already run some google-flavoured linux anyway? So the big question is whether it's arm or x86. In theory you can get most distros for either but arm is a bitch. I don't really know anything about chromebooks.

If you want cheap hardware, go for tip shops, just don't trust the disks with anything important.

"Linux terminal" probably means bash, which may not have real access to anything, utility depends on that.
