@lain I remember picking up hitch-hikers as a kid. Like, being in the car with my folks driving somewhere and stopping to pick up hitch-hikers and take them down the road with us. It used to be pretty commonplace, as I recollect.

How come all home appliances peaked reliability in the 70s? Freezers, washers and dryers, vacuum cleaners, cars, toasters, everything. It was all figured out over 50 years ago but we've slowly overengineered everything to the point you're often more efficient just doing chores by hand like it's the 1800s.
