@Wolffkran I unfortunately can't find the piece I remembered on this one, but it's interesting to me that there's now a whole body of journalistic talk about the era that makes it sound as if the americans were more hands-off than they used to.

I totally believe the story as it was originally relayed, where apathetic, dumb GIs who just wanna go home can't tell the difference between a 400-year old copy the the bible in german or mein kampf, nor would they care to. It bothers me because the very same old guys who love collecting military history and whine about a sporterized garand don't give a shit about the widespread cultural destruction imposed by the allies.
