nobody’s excited for agentic bullshit or support for cryptocurrency grifts of various stripes (yes really) but alongside features that introduce nonsensical reliance on JavaScript, that’s all the web standards people want to talk about

these standardization processes don’t represent what anyone wants except the corporations that pay for a seat. maybe that’s a bit obvious, but it needs to be pointed out how rotten the incentive structure is.

I’ve got very little patience for software engineering “professionals” coming into this thread to pretend that LLMs are good at finding bugs, as if we’re not in the same profession and I haven’t been forced to use the fucking things

all research not funded directly by AI corporations shows they’re fucking terrible at finding bugs and introduce many more than they fix, and that’s in line with personal experience

the machine will constantly gaslight you into thinking your code is riddled with bugs and it’s fixing them, and by pure luck it might even be right! you’re very likely to remember the times it’s right more than the times it absolutely fucks it

it also really, really wants your code to be a formless blob, and the thing’s output will get hilariously manipulative if you push back on it at all, as you would with a person reviewing your code. and people using an LLM to review your code will get real shitty with you too, cause the machine said you’re wrong.

it’s real weird to be in software and call yourself an engineer and not notice any of this, but that’s our field unfortunately

“but why are Anubis and the anti-LLM font (that doesn’t stop LLMs but does stop people using screen readers) using LLMs to turn their code into slop? isn’t that hypocritical of them?” the thing you have to understand is that AI boosters don’t give a shit about consent and they don’t want there to be any spaces that are free from generative AI. the technology doesn’t work without violating consent.

so if you don’t care about consent and you need every space to use AI, of course you’re going to try to take over the anti-AI space. even the people loudly saying no must use AI. they especially must be forced to use it! that’s why one early application from OpenAI was an LLM detector… an incredibly bad one, because it “worked” by asking ChatGPT to detect LLM output. systems like this are still used sometimes in academia, where they’re notorious for giving false positives. a similar system was used to falsely accuse the Pope of using an LLM to write his anti-AI blog post.

the takeover and weaponization of the anti-AI space allows AI corporations to benefit even from the public’s vast hatred of AI. that’s why you need to look carefully at groups like the one that’s doing polls and organizing protests in California. they polled and found that most people hate AI (obviously), and then spun that into demanding a “pause” and “guardrails” because “AI is just too powerful and dangerous”, and you’ve heard this song and dance before. it’s the exact Effective Altruist rhetoric that Altman and Amodei and the other AI company CEOs love to spout during interviews, because it allows them to control the market.

the public hates AI, and it has nothing to do with a false impression that LLMs are powerful

the public hates AI because it’s unfit for purpose, actively damaging their neighborhoods and promising much more damage beyond that, making their work miserable, constantly being promoted by deadeyed grifters, it’s creepy as shit in both implementation and proposed goals, etc etc etc

the TESCREAL crowd is trying to redirect that rage into something they can use, and so far it’s not working, but you should be very careful you’re not doing their job for them

imagine willfully understanding both the social and technological implications of slop in the kernel so hard that you insist that what happens in the fucking Linux kernel doesn’t matter for a Linux desktop, a thing that’s built on and in the Linux kernel

words don’t mean a god damn thing to these people

do you remember when all of the techbros in the hacker news set were weirdly obsessed with bland meal replacement shakes being more efficient and the future of nutrition and they all kept shouting about how eating food with flavor and texture is irrational

and then it turned out most people like eating normal meals, and there’s well-known health consequences for all-liquid diets, and the computer science weirdo running the thing was really fucking bad at food safety, and the scientifically proven complete nutrition had gigantic gaps in the nutrition it provided, and like meal replacement shakes did in fact already exist and you can just buy them

anyway it’s good the tech industry learned from that and didn’t try to push flavorless slop that’s unfit for its advertised purpose onto a public that doesn’t want flavorless slop

someone decided to post on this thread and do the literal thing where they made a bunch of bizarre, incorrect assumptions about how a liquid-only diet can’t possibly be bad for the human jaw aka one of the things this thread is about

anyway speaking of tech people making assumptions about medicine, here’s Rob Rhinehart the creator of Soylent killing his gut fauna so he wouldn’t poop for a day: archive.ph/n03UC

> Flush toilets use enormous quantities of water so I needed a way to make it unnecessary.
> Feces are almost entirely deceased gut bacteria and water. I massacred my gut bacteria the day before by consuming a DIY Soylent version with no fiber and taking 500mg of Rifaximin, an antibiotic with poor bioavailability, meaning it stays in your gut and kills bacteria. Soylent’s microbiome consultant advised that this is a terrible idea so I do not recommend it. However, it worked. Throughout the challenge I did not defecate.

technology is when you accept a fucking pointless challenge from some guy and decide that instead of buying, like, any of the types of flushless toilets available, or using an outhouse, or just holding it for a day, you modify your terrible fucking product and slip a doctor $20 for some black market antibiotics to do potentially permanent damage to your own gut biome so that you can prove *something* to *somebody*
