Flying monkeys are the people narcissists use against their victim similar to the flying monkeys the witch in the wizard of oz sends out as best as I understand and this is a old figure of speech
there is also an expression about getting a monkey off your back that I think is common for drug addicts trying to rehabilitate or pretending to do so to use
