I'm in the market for a home office detached media storage unit after one of my SSDs failed.

I'm considering the Buffalo Linkstation 12TB unit for $450. I'm not familiar with the brand though. I don't know if there are better options.

@Tfmonkey

Looks OK, and Buffalo is a known name in the market.

Anything you get will have RAID, so best to also buy spare drives for when one of them fucks up. Never RAID 0. Either RAID 1 or better yet, RAID 5 if your unit can do it.

See this for an explanation (wundertech.net/what-is-the-bes)

Also, RAID is not backup it's just disk redundancy. It pays to also backup to a single high capacity disk in case of major oopsies.

Good luck.

@Tfmonkey I'm gonna ask RGE. See if he knows better. He has mentioned NAS before.

@kaiservenom @Tfmonkey

Personally I prefer DAS over NAS. I don't need a permanently on, internet-facing, networked server in my house just to serve files on my LAN.

DAS, non-networked, no internet and only on when i need it. Works for me.

@UncleIroh Oh... I actually didn't know about the existence of DAS. It was precisely what I needed. I thought I would have to put up with NAS internet-thing. Thanks.

I only know NAS because RGE mentioned it.

@Tfmonkey tfm, why not just use Mega, encryoted servers, they cant see or decrypt ur shit, if not then just make your own storage device using raspberry pi

@Tfmonkey I am a fan of Synology NAS units, excellent software and you can buy 2 or 4 bay units for around $200-$400 without drives.
