@h4890 @SilentSeeker

Take anatomy for an example

They make maps of the body and assign names to those regions of the map. Anatomists often debate then decide by consensus where the borders for naming things should be. For examp!e a blood vessel can change names by consensus without merging or branching with another blood vessel simply by crossing a border

If you want to know how muscles move something then that is biomechanics which is physics or biochemistry which is chemistry

@amerika @sj_zero respect them, and live our lives so as to increase positive feelings, and decrease negative ones.

@amerika @sj_zero unhappiness, and that is just a fact of nature.

Disregarding feeling, in favour of an ideology, religion, ism, and doing what the leader says, despite that it making you unhappy, is extremely unhealthy, and if pursued long enough, will cause severe mental illness, depression, and might ultimately cost you your life.

Not to speak of wasted opportunities.

So a core _strength_ of individualism, is that it focuses on your feelings, and teaches us to

@amerika @sj_zero

This is an underdetermined scientific hypothesis that is sadly beyond science to prove. Finding the "ultimate" parameter ,individualism or altruism, is not possible, since it seeks to explain all behaviour. We can of course infer, and speculate, but empirical proof is difficult.

When it comes to doing it for "feelings" I disagree, and I argue that it is in fact the most healthy way to look at things. We have feelings of happiness, and

@amerika @sj_zero I disagree. For me, this is egoism. But this is an old debate, so I won't repeat the arguments from the wonderful and very interesting mailinglist.

@amerika @sj_zero

Liberalism, political doctrine that takes protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual to be the central problem of politics.

britannica.com/topic/liberalis

It does not need to imply freeing people from something.

Egalitarianism is the opposite of classical liberalism or libertarianism, since it ascribes no values to the individual.

But we know our definitions differ, which is why we arrive at different conclusions from the same words.

@amerika @sj_zero Not quite... both individualists and egoists can have goals beyond themselves, if and only if, those goals end up in feelings of pleasure, achievement etc. for the individual.

The main thing for the individual, is that it is my happiness that counts first and foremost, and if having goals beyond myself, increases my happiness, then that's all fine for the individualist.

@shortstories @SilentSeeker This is the truth! You could say biology is a helper science. They run around measuring things, find plants and stuff, which they bring back to chemists and physicists to analyze and draw conclusions from. Once the intellectual work is done ,they get their name on the paper as a thanks for running around in a forest collecting samples.

@SilentSeeker @shortstories No one has ever doubet that the climate changes. I sent graphs that show you that the climate has changed enormously, and if you check the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere in distant history you'll note that it was 5x-10x of today.

Did the planet burn? Did it explode? Not at all. Instead it was covered in vegetation and life.

@amerika I like what you're saying in this post, but I feel like the word "individualist" carries two almost opposite definitions. In my view you can be an individualist in that you as an individual are the most important unit in the world and therefore the world has a duty to cater to you as an individual (what you seem to be describing here), or individualism as in considering yourself to be the one who is ultimately responsible for your own actions, behavior and outcomes and the world doesn't owe you or anyone else shit. The latter is an antidote to the former, and it's important to recognize the former as a vice even if the latter can be a virtue. You could almost call the former egoism (which you sort of do in the article

@sj_zero @amerika I use the words individualist to mean the healthy individual who bases his life on taking responsibility for himself. The other one I call an egoist, which is an unhealthy and destructive state of mind, and which, if too severe, can be seen as a mental illness.

Don't let the left capture the word individual just like they did with the word liberal. Liberal originally meant the ideology of freedom. This was perverted by the left to spread socialism. It is really very sad.

@Escoffier Shush! Only the police can protect you and no one else! 😎

@freepatriot I want reasoning and proof before I take such evidence seriously.

This kind of advice has been repeated every day since forever, by a lot of people.
