that's the thing - being unenlightened, even to the point of overt mental illness, can result in tremendous material gain. not just wealth, but status, accomplishment, an ego that believes itself worthy or even great

It's an interesting point that to be Enlightened is to be utterly without preferences. In the extreme, that is equivalent to death. So while we may recognize enlightenment, we must choose to be unenlightened if we wish to participate in the world.
